SMED vs. Reduced Effort Change Over

At a major consumer products company, SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Dies) had been implemented and applied for 20 years.  As a result, they did not believe that The Reduced Effort Changeover (REC) process would deliver any additional time reduction.  However, after 4 days of applying REC they were able to further reduce their liquid filler change over downtime by 33%.  Operators commented that the “REC process made us see inconveniences as losses, and made the work easier.”
